To Whom It May Concern:

I’m Angela Ellis, with Sugar Rush Bakery LLC, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Incorporated March 2015.  We are a baking company, licensed to manufacture and distribute baked goods. Previously I worked for Career Tech in Lawton, Oklahoma, and was heavily involved in women in business, politics, major’s commission, all things supporting women in our community and our state.  I was invited to attend the Oklahoma Women’s Coalition annual luncheon a few years ago, and my perception was permanently altered after learning of these staggering statistics on women in our State.

We are the Number 1 State in the Nation for incarcerating women. Yes, that's right, not football, I said putting women in prison, #1, not something to be proud of.  85% of these women have children, what kind of impact does this have on the family unit? 90% of the crimes are non-violent, usually drug related or prostitution. These women are mothers, sisters, daughters, doing the only thing they know to provide for their family. This major social issue has a negative impact on our State. These women continue to live this cycle. They know no different, never being educated or having healthy examples to follow of what a healthy life consists of.

Once these women have been put into the system, it becomes almost impossible for them to get on track by themselves.

At Sugar Rush Bakery, we employee these women, and offer a holistic approach to healthy life skills. We have partnerships with a variety of organizations, including Women in Recovery, Resonance, TheChurchAT, and Tulsa Technology Center.  WIR, Resonance as well as a number of other organizations are feeders for our workforce, Tulsa Technology Center has the skills assessment and Professional Training piece, and TheChurchAT has positive, loving, women who serve as mentors.  All of these components make up the perfect mix for success, sustainability, empowerment and ultimately, independence for women in Oklahoma.

Our growth and the economic impact we are having in the State of Oklahoma is due to the support and advice of SCORE and TEDC!

We were new to Tulsa and not familiar with specific organizations who support entrepreneurs and small businesses.  I was aware of the Women’s Business Center at REI and connected with their new representative Christina Culver, who then introduced me to Ron Rollor and SCORE. Mr. Rollor has been instrumental in helping me grow my business!  Sugar Rush had a very simple business plan in place, lacking all financial documents and the ability to take it before any funding institutions.  He was able to help me tweak my business plan and connect me with Tulsa Economic Development Corporation, who is now funding me for continued growth!  Our financials are all complete with 3 year projections in place, and we have a very clear plan of growth lined out moving forward.

Had it not been for the connections with REI, SCORE and TEDC, Sugar Rush Bakery would not be where we are today!  We are very grateful for the support and advice given by these organizations.

Sincerely,

Angela Ellis, CEO
